IRCCS GALELAZZI HOSPITAL - MILAN- CORRECTION OF HIP-SPINE SYNDOMRE WITH UNIQUE SURGERY
Curriculum vitae
Roberto Bassani deals with spinal diseases with medical and surgical treatment for spinal traumas, cervical and lumbar disc herniations as well as scoliosis and deformities, thanks to traditional techniques and modern minimally invasive approaches as well as the most advanced technologies.
Academic training
After having obtained the classical high school diploma he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia. In October 1992 he graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia with a score of 110/110 and honors. In the second session of November 1992 he passed the state exam for the qualification to the profession of doctor-surgeon with full marks at the University of Pavia. He is currently enrolled in the register of surgeons in the province of Pavia. In October 1997 he was proclaimed specialist with a score of 50 / 50L at the University of Pavia. Since 1998 he has mainly devoted himself to vertebral surgery. He attended the post-graduate university course as a research doctor in anatomy at the 2nd faculty of medicine of the University of Pavia. He is fluent in the English language.
International training
From 1998 to 2006 residential refresher activity and fellowship of vertebral surgery at the following institutes:
• "Twin cities Spine Center" of Minneapolis (USA) directed by Dr. F. Dennis, R.Winter, J.Lonstein
• "Departement De Chirurgie Orthopedique et Traumatologique de L'Institut Mutualiste Montsourisè" of Paris directed by Prof. Christian Mazel
• “Service d'Orthopédie du rachis et de Traumatologie du Sport” de l'Hopitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg directed by Prof. Jean Paul Steib.
• "Department of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery" in Bad Berka Weimar (Germany) Head of Department: Heiner Boe
• "Department of Pediatric and Adult Spinal deformity" at Sutter Neuroscience Medical Group of Sacramento (CA), USA - Head: George D. Picetti III. (second half 2006)
• From 1997 to October 2000 he was permanent medical director with assistant functions at the Division of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Hospital of Gallarate (Varese), personally carrying out numerous traumatology surgeries, general orthopedics and being responsible for vertebral surgery.
After a period of study and training abroad he returned to Italy where, winner of a public competition, he worked as a permanent medical director at the Division of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the IRCCS Policlinico Universitario San Matteo of Pavia dealing with traumatology and Spinal Surgery which he was responsible for coordinating the Outpatient Department of the Column Pathology of the hospital. He was a member of the commission of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo for the multidisciplinary treatment of vertebral metastases.
From 2010 to April 2023, he was the head of the 2nd Division of Spinal Surgery.
Since May 2024, he has been responsible for the Unified Division of Spinal Surgery (formed by the merger of the three existing departments) and Director of the Orthopedic Department 1 at IRCCS Galeazzi Sant'Ambrogio Hospital in Milan.
He is frequently called as a “visiting surgeon” and consultant in various Italian hospitals to perform complex revision operations on the lumbar and thoracic spine through anterior approaches with minimally invasive and traditional techniques.
He has performed more than 4500 major spinal surgery (of which more than 2000 anterior approaches) of the cervical, dorsal and lumbar tracts for the treatment of spinal trauma, scoliosis and kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, canal stenosis, cervical and lumbar degenerative discopathies, tumors metastases of the vertebrae, infections, segmental instabilities of the spine.
He currently performs all surgical approaches to the spine: posterior and anterior-posterior combined.
It hosts surgeons (fellows) from every Italian region and from abroad to demonstrate the techniques of anterior approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine and revision techniques in adult deformities.
He is frequently called as a speaker at national and international conferences on topics concerning minimally invasive spinal surgery and complex deformity surgery. He is the author of scientific publications in international journals and coordinator of research projects on a national and international basis still in progress. He is reviewer of the international scientific journal European Spine Journal.
From 2005 to 2007 he coordinated surgical anatomy sessions on cadaver, teaching the techniques of anterior approach to the spine for fusion (ALIF) to surgeons from various European countries.
In 2006-2007 at the Anatomy Laboratory of the "Université René Descartes" in Paris (France) and at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Vienna he was a "tutor" in the practical theoretical course on cadaver organized by GIS (Italian Society of Spinal Surgery) for spinal surgeons in training.
In May 2008 he organized a national conference in Pavia entitled "New approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of bone disease" in collaboration with oncologists and haematologists.
In January 2009 he won “The First Prize Winner at the 13th International ARGOS (European Association of Research Groups for Spinal Osteosinthesis) Spine Symposium in Paris, with a lecture entitled“ Long distance anterior revision surgery after TDR. Minimal invasive technique ".
He was invited in September 2009 and 2014 to the JPSSSTSS (Japan Society for the study of Surgical Technique for Spine and Spinal nerves) conference for master's lectures (invited lecturer) on complex techniques in vertebral surgery.
He is adjunct professor (2014-15 and 2019 to date) of "Advanced surgical techniques in neurosurgery" in spinal surgery in the "II level two-year University Master" at the University of Turin and in 2017-2018 lecturer in the School of Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology of the University of Pisa.
From the 2018-19 academic year he has been carrying out regular and continuous teaching activities (surgical anatomy of anterior approaches to the spine) at the School of Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology of the State University of Milan.
Specific interests are congenital (deformity) and degenerative pathology of the spine, vertebral surgery with particular attention to the study and practice of anterior approaches to the spine and to the development of minimally invasive techniques (anterior surgical approaches to the spine, endoscopic surgery of the thoracic spine).
He is the creator of the innovative surgical technique of minimally invasive anterior approach to the lumbar spine through the periumbilical approach.
Nele 2020 he participated and won the competition for the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) of the Ministry of University and Scientific Research (MIUR) obtaining the qualification as University Professor of Band II - Orthopedics and Traumatology discipline.
Since 2019 he is a member, as a volunteer surgeon who performs assistance activities at the Hospital of the village of Afagnan in the Republic of TOGO, of a group of doctors coordinated by Prof. Giuseppe Peretti of the State University of Milan
